Camellia Sinensis: The Benefits Of Tea

Today we are going to talk about a drink that we are all familiar with. We really don’t need to know the scientific name of this plant, we’ll leave that to the scientists. We will therefore simply call it tea. Teas are made from the leaves of this beautiful plant, which has not only provided us with excellent medicinal aid since ancient times (in ancient China, tea was used as a healing plant), but also has beautiful flowers.

It was the Dutch who introduced tea to the western world when they returned to Europe from their travels to Asia. However, it was not the Dutch who made the drink popular, but the English (in England, ‘Would you like a cup of tea?’ is one of the most common and used sayings).

It is often said that there is no disease that a plant cannot cure. Plants have been used by humans as medicinal remedies since ancient times (in Mesopotamia, Egyptian, Greek cultures, to name a few…). This happened in Europe as well as in Asia, although the use of tea has its origin in Asia.

Advantages

If tea is drunk regularly, it can bring us many benefits. First, the drink contains caffeine  and while this may make it unsuitable for some people (caffeine is not recommended for small children or those suffering from hypertension), it can help us stay awake and alert. But it can also improve our mental flexibility and help with concentration. This makes it an ideal drink for during an exam period or long working hours that demand a lot from us.

Tea contains much less caffeine than coffee, making it an ideal substitute. It not only helps your mind, but the rest of your body as well. The antioxidants it contains help to promote your circulation and it also contains many vitamins, including vitamin C.

It can help in the fight against cavities, because tea also contains fluoride that strengthens our tooth enamel. However, fluoride is not always good for you. Too much of this substance can be toxic (but don’t worry, the amount of tea you would need to consume before this happens is huge).

It is generally recommended that you drink tea separately from your meals, as consuming tea and food at the same time prevents the body’s iron absorption.

How should I consume tea?

We advise you to drink tea on a daily basis, because it is really worth it. There are tons of recipes in cookbooks or on the internet about how to make it. In general, these are very simple and you can make a delicious and healthy drink with minimal effort. It doesn’t matter whether you drink it hot or cold, the good properties remain the same at lower temperatures. Plus, this is the kind of drink that quenches your thirst and is much better for you than a glass of Coke, for example.

One glass of Coca Cola (250 ml) contains six sugar cubes. The body has to do something with the sudden ingestion of this large amount of sugar. The liver therefore responds to this increase in insulin by producing fat. Sugar also contains some harmful ingredients, such as E388, orthophosphoric acid. For these reasons and all the reasons we mentioned above, give tea at least a chance. We are sure you will love it!
